The Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode on Wednesday presented 1000 safety life jackets to the pupils of 35 schools in Epe. This was necessitated prior to the frequent boat mishaps in the state.
Mrs. Ambode, while presenting the jackets to the pupils said safety must remain the watch word of all. She noted that boat mishaps had become been rampant in the state.
“The parents also have a role to play. They must make it a duty to see that when their children or wards are commuting to school on water they carry their life jackets with them every morning, just as they carry their school bags.
“Remember that as we pray for God’s protection over our children, we must also take necessary precautionary steps. Our children are our future and their safety must enjoy our prime consideration at all times.
“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that accidents and needless loss of lives on our waterways are eliminated or drastically reduced through strict enforcement of safety standards.” She Added.
Also The managing director of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Engineer Abisola Kamson in his remarks disclosed that the agency has impounded over 500 fake life jackets from operators in the state.
Lamenting the influx of substandard jackets across the jetties, Kamson said efforts are at advanced stage to mop up counterfeit jackets.
She said the need to raise safety awareness level and adherence among the residents particularly those who commute by water made LASWA and Total Nigeria to donate lifejackets to ensure safety on the waterways.
Kamson said the agency has continued to distribute standard lifejackets that have passed safety and quality checks to operators and communities.
She explained that the donation of 1000 units of children-specific lifejackets to 35 riverine schools in Epe was to further encourage the people particularly the riverine areas on the need to be safety conscious while commuting via water.
