202 Laptops Donated To Science School By NDDC

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated 202 laptop computers to the Niger Delta Science School (NDSS), Rumuola, Port Harcourt.

In her speech while handing over the computers to the authorities of the NDSS, in Port Harcourt at the weekend, acting managing director of the NDDC, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, promised also that the facilities in the school would be renovated and re-equipped to bring them up to a standard befitting a special science institution.

Semenitari stated that by the end of 2016, the academic environment of the school would have been totally transformed.

EKSU: 2016/2017 Admission into Certificate and Diploma Programmes Announced

The management of Ekiti State University (EKSU) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Diploma and Certificate Programme of the Directorate for Human Capital Development (DHCD) in the institution.

Available Programmes:

Admission Requirements:
  1. Prospective students should include: Matured students who are professionals such as traders, clergymen, artisans, welders, electricians, traditional rulers and chiefs, civil servants – state and local government workers, court attendants etc.
  2. The young school leavers who needed the Diploma certificate for the direct entry admission into the University.

Qualifications:
  1. For Diploma Programmes, candidates must have at least four credit passes in the SSCE. GCE. NECO. NABTEB or their equivalent in relevant courses.
  2. Special consideration Waiver may be given to matured candidates with lesser qualifications but with cognate and relevant working experience;
  3. Candidates should note that there other requirements that may be specific to a particular programme depending on the type of course;
  4. The basic requirements for Certificate Programme shall be a minimum of the JSS 3 certificate or its equivalents.

Method of Application:
Candidates are to pay the sum of Four thousand naira only (N4.000:00) for the Certificate programmes and Six thousand naira only (N6.000.00) for the Diploma programme by the usage of ATM card (Verve/Mastercard).

Candidates are to log on to the University’s website: eksu.edu.ng to fill in the application form and print a copy of the form after submission.

Duly completed application forms with photocopy of credentials are to be submitted to the office of the Secretary, Directorate for Human Capital Development (DHCD) of the University.

NOTE:
The O'Level requirements for all courses are to be obtained at not more than two sittings.
All advertised programmes run on weekends or evenings depending on department or course.

Corrupt Practices: BSU Sacks Registrar, Bursar

The appointments of the Registrar of Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, Dr Timothy Utile and the bursar, Mr Aondoakaa Kwaghfan have been terminated following alleged corrupt practices by the duo.

This followed the report of a seven-man visitation panel set up by Governor Samuel Ortom to review the activities of the institution from 2010-2015.

It was learnt that the Bursar and the Registrar were key actors in the fraudulent activities that occurred in the tenure of the Past Vice Chancellor, Prof Charity Angya which has necessitated the termination of their appointments.

Rape: Proprietor Bags 10 Years Imprisonment

The proprietor of God’s Grace Nursery and Primary School, Mr. Babatunde Ibitoye, was yesterday handed 10 years jail term without option of fine by an Ado-Ekiti High Court, for raping a 10-year-old pupil of his school. 

The accused, whose school is located at Fayemi Market, Agric Olope Area of Ajilosun in Ado-Ekiti, was said to have committed the offence on June 10, 2013, in a bush very close to the market. The state Ministry of Justice had preferred a one-count charge of rape against the accused person on December 3, 2013 in suit number HAD/F11/2013. 

In her judgement, Justice Toyin Abodunde agreed with the evidence of the plaintiff and facts of the matter, saying she has been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant had sexually abused the victim, who was her pupil at the time the offence was committed. 

Justice Abodunde upheld the argument of the Department of Public prosecution, DPP, and the victim’s evidence to the effect that the defendant was caught at the scene of the incident and could not have denied knowledge of the offence.

LASG Removes Principal, Deputy and Four Teachers For Assaulting Pupil

FOR alleged inhuman treatment of a Junior Secondary Two (JS II) pupil, Principal of Eva Adelaja Girls Secondary School in Bariga, Lagos, Mrs C. O. Coker, Vice-Principal, Mrs Balogun and four teachers were yesterday removed by the government.

The teachers are Mr Bello (Mathematics), Mrs Tejumaye (English language), Mrs Omoge (Physic Education) and Mr Bakare (Economics).

Their removal followed the investigation into the flogging of the pupil, Ogechi Anyalewechi, on March 16 by the teachers on the principal’s instruction.

Lagos State Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary Mrs Olabisi Ariyo said they were removed because of their complicity in the “assault saga”, adding: They will no longer work in the school from Thursday, March 24 (today)”.

Ogechi was flogged on her bare buttocks following an altercation with the school’s Head Girl.


The 14-year-old pupil got into trouble after slapping back the Head Girl, who reported her to the school.

Besides being caned, Ogechi was made to cut grass for over four hours.

Ogechi suffered body wounds and was taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

When the incident became public, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development Princess Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf directed the Directorate of School Social Services of her ministry to probe it.

A fact-finding team led by a director, which visited the school, on Tuesday, indicted the principal and the teachers.

Yesterday, Oghechi, her parents, the headgirl, the principal and the teachers appeared before a panel chaired by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola. Mrs Ariyo was in attendance.

The head girl, it was learnt, confessed that she slapped Ogechi and apologised for her action.

According to Princess Akinbile-Yussuf, “the Director of the School Social Services on my instruction went to the school to carry out on the spot investigation following which all those involved including the principal, the head girl, Ogechi, her parents and Tutor-General of Education District 2, were on Wednesday March 23 (yesterday), invited before a panel chaired by Muri-Okunola and his education ministry counterpart, Mrs Ariyo was also there.

“The head girl confessed that she slapped Ogechi first and apologised to her for her improper behaviour. It was also confirmed that the principal subsequently instructed some teachers to give Ogechi about 12 strokes of the cane on her backside. The principal and teachers have since been removed and will now report at the Education District 2, while the assault victim and the erring head girl were appropriately counselled by the School Social Services Directorate on the proper way to conduct themselves in school.”

She added: “We have also instructed that the victim (Ogechi) should not be harassed or molested as she returns to the school to continue her studies and her parents were happy at the outcome of the intervention.

“However, the ministry shall henceforth step up the school social services to educate both students and teachers on the best conduct in school environment across all public schools in Lagos State.”

FUPRE Uncovers The Construction Of A Mini-refinery As It Matriculates 715 Students

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, FUPRE, Delta says it has reached an advanced stage in the construction of a mini-refinery in response to the difficult challenge of fuel supply facing Nigeria. 

FUPRE Vice Chancellor, VC, at FUPRE, Prof. Akii Ibhadode, disclosed this at the 9th Matriculation of the institution where 715 intakes took the oath and sign the matriculation register as new students. According to him, the mini-refinery sited in the school’s premises is near completion and awaiting the nod of the industry regulator, the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR. 

He said the project when completed, would also serve as a legally acceptable alternative to discouraging the environmentally destructive illegal refineries. 

To the matriculants, Prof Ibhadode said: “You must demonstrate sound academic aptitude to provide technical answers in line with societal quest. You must weigh consequences of your individual and collective actions. “You should be on guard to resist any attempt to lure you into cultism. Cultism is evil before God and man. The school will not condone destruction of its property or any unruly behaviour.” 

The 9th Matriculation of FUPRE also featured for the first time since its establishment in 2007, the rendition of the varsity’s anthem reportedly produced by a committee led by Dr. Chinelo Nwokolo.

Jaiye Kuti Announced As LASPOTECH Ambassador

Popular Nollywood actress, Jaiye Kuti has been announced as an ambassador of Lagos State Polytechnic by the Rector of the Polytechnic, Samuel Sogunro.

The ‘Jaiyeola Ni Monje’ actress, who is an alumnus of the citadel of learning, was announced as the school ambassador alongside Olanrewaju Olakanlu of Mr. and Mrs. Kogberegbe TV programme, who is equally an ex-student of the higher institution.

Sogunro made the declaration during a visit by the duo to his office recently to rejoice with him on his birthday and to present some students expensive gifts.

Examination Misconduct: LASU Suspends 25 Students

The management of the Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended 25 students from different departments for examination misconduct.

This statement was confirmed by our reporter from the school information department on Wednesday.

A breakdown revealed that 19 students are from the external system in Festac, three from the Isolo campus and three from the main campus, Faculty of Social Sciences.

The exam misconduct according to LASU bulletin were committed in 2012/2013, 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 academic sessions.

The reasons for their suspension includes the use of fake docket, impersonation, some were caught with answers on a phone, others with answer written on a piece of paper, another with fake exam docket and LASUES identity card, exam script found to be suspicious during grading and one caught with photocopies material inside the exam hall.

Fourteen of the affected students are in 500 level, final year at the external system, three in 400 level, seven in 300 level and one in 200 level. The suspension is for the 2015/2016 academic session.

The statement reads: ‘’The university management on the recommendation of the students’ disciplinary committee has approved the immediate suspension of 25 students of the institution for the 2015/2016 academic session.

‘’The students were suspension for failing to appear before the examination misconduct panels set up by the university, to consider cases of examination misconduct allegations levelled against them.’’

“The disciplinary panel took the decision at its 37th statutory meeting and directed that the students be re-invited for trial while serving the suspension and should liaise with their faculties/campuses for a new date.

In related development, the university has revoked the professional admission offered to 703 candidates for the 2015/2016 academic session for making fraudulent claims.

Six Final Year Students Expelled By YABATECH Due To Fake Result

The Academic Board of the Yaba College of Technology has expelled six final year students for presenting fake or altered National Diploma (ND) and National Certificate of Education (NCE) results for admission.

The expulsion notice is contained in a circular signed by Mrs Taiwo Obadimu, the Deputy Registrar of the college, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

According to the circular, the authorities of the institution considered the report on verification of the affected students’ results and found them culpable.

“Their expulsion was approved, having found the students guilty for presenting fake/altered ND/NCE results, as their conduct violated the college’s rules and regulations.

“The students are advised to hand over all college property, including student identity cards in their possession, to the heads of their department, the Polytechnic Librarian and the Dean of Students’ Affairs, with immediate effect,’’ the circular stated.

NAN reports that the affected students were in the departments of Food Technology, Mathematics and Integrated Science, Physics Education, Estate Management and Valuation, Industrial Technical Education and Industrial Maintenance Engineering. (NAN)

Efon Alaaye indigenes get scholars/vocational awards

To honour and celebrate academic excellence and entrepreneurship training, Efon Alaaye Development League has awarded eight indigenes scholarships worth over N2 million.

Speaking during the award ceremony held at Efon Alaaye House, Lagos, the Chairman, Efon Alaaye Development League, Lagos, Mr Emmanuel Ajewole said: “The Efon Alaaye League, Lagos is standing up and setting in motion with over N2 million to sponsor the Award on annual basis with a view to promoting and supporting worthy Efon Alaaye youths in their tertiary education, vocational training and self employment.”

He said that despite considerable progress made by the Ekiti State government in education, its youths are still confronted with financial challenges in achieving their dreams. According to him, due to lack of financial support, and turbulence in global economy, so many dreams and focus of youths have been lost.

The solutions, he noted lies in Non Governmental Organization and governance of society and the equitable distribution of economic resources which the government alone cannot provide.

Awardees of the maiden edition include: Olawuyi Oluwanifemi Alice from Federal University of Technology, Akure, Olajuyigbe Gbenga Michael, Yaba College of Technology, Kolawole Esther Adekemi, Ekiti State University, Balogun Oluwatoyin Patricia, Ekiti State University and Adande Samson Enitan from Federal College of Education, Akoka, Lagos.

Other awardees at entrepreneurial category were; Mr. Ajayi Adeoye Michael, a photographer, Mr. Faroye, Mayowa Felix, a barber and Mr. Abajingin Dare, a photographer.

Asked, the criteria for awards, the Secretary, Mr Ope Makanjuola said that a minimum standard for tertiary institutions applicants is producing evidence of admission letter and to keep enjoying it, such students must maintain second class upper and merit if Polytechnics.

“Out of 50 applications, we pruned it to 27 and from there, we got the 5 awardees,” he explained.

For vocational applicants, he said that the League sent letters to their trainers for recommendation s where 15 people were recommended, but finally settled for 3 persons.

Lagos State Governor Splashes N2.5M On Schools Debate Winners

In line with its commitment to ensuring continual success of the Lagos State Schools’ Debate as one of the channels of promoting youth development, hard work and healthy competition amongst students the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has added N2.5 million to the cash prizes of winners of this year’s competition.

Presenting the cash prizes to the winners, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, urged all secondary schools in the state to brace up to the challenge, work hard and participate in the subsequent editions with the aim of defeating the champions of today.

With this development, Badagry Senior Grammar School went home with the star prize of N1.5m while the first runner up, Ogudu Senior High School, went home with N1.1m. Lagos Progressive Senior Secondary School, Surulere and CMS Girls Grammar School both coasted home with N750,000 and N500,000 respectively.

While commending the parents, the Deputy Governor specially appreciated the teachers for working tirelessly in grooming the students in the debate competition, the result of which has manifested in the proficiency in which the students intelligently articulated their thoughts on issues on a broad spectrum covering academics, political, economic, social and moral development in the nation.

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Olabisi Ariyo, stated that the annual debate, which is an integral part of the state annual school calendar in the area of co-curricular activities, is opened to all public and private senior secondary schools in the state.

Her words “The competition is geared towards improving academic research, students’ intellectual capabilities and communication skills as well as instilling in them the confidence to speak intelligently anywhere and at any time.

Teacher Jailed For Assaulting Student In Edo State

An Egor Chief Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo state, southern Nigeria, has sentenced a 47-year-old secondary school teacher and father of two, Mr. Rotimi Olayemi, for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old female student in his school.

Olayemi, a teacher of English Language at King of Kings College, Benin, who was convicted on Wednesday, was said to have committed the crime on 26 May, 2014.

He pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge bordering on unlawful assault.
The prosecutor, Mrs. Osasu Ewemade, had told the court that the convict usually invited the victim to his office where he would hug, kiss, fondle the breasts of the girl and put his hand in her private part.

She said the offence contravened Section 360 of the Criminal Code Cap.48, Vol. II laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo state.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Igho Braimoh, who found the convict guilty as charged, sentenced him to one year on each count with an option of N50,000 on each of the count.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

Speaker Seeks For Safety Nets For Youths As Discount Card Debut

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has called for the provision of safety nets for Nigerian youths in order to cushion the effect of economic hardships currently facing the country.

According to him, when the teeming youths of the country are assured of sustained assistance through their education years, restiveness and other crimes would naturally reduce drastically.

Dogara spoke yesterday in Abuja while unveiling the Nigerian Students and Youth Corps Members Discount Card (NSYCDC).

Represented by the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Pally Iriase, the Speaker also noted that it has become expedient for Nigerians to be innovative if the country want to catch up with other developed nations.

“Nobody need be told how harsh the economic situation is any longer because it is very obvious in most families. With our mono economy that is dependent on oil, coupled with the tumbling oil price, we need to ask ourselves how long are we going to depend on the unstable oil price?

“I am not a supporter of quick fix solution, I think what we need to do is to redirect our economy. That is why I commend the this innovative platform that is offering a new lease of life for our students and youth corpers.

“If they have to think less of their economic and social needs, I think they would be able to concentrate more on their studies and by extension, how to move the country forward, technologically and economically.

“The implication of this is that crime and other forms of criminality would be drastically reduced since the youth have better things to do with their time,” Dogara said.

While encouraging all Nigerian youths to avail themselves of the opportunities provided by the platform, Dogara urged other corporate organizations to partner the platform to enable the students and serving corps members enjoy their services at discounted rates.

For his part, a consultant to the platform, Hon. Bimbo Daramola, said the novel project was to make life more tolerable for the Nigerian youths that are facing shrinking financial resources.

Daramola, who is a former member of the House of Representatives, added that with the platform, users can get more with the little resources at their disposal with discount on goods and services ranging from one to 50 percent.

According to him, students and youths in the United Kingdom (UK), United States (US), Canada, Germany, Kenya and Ghana among several other country have been enjoying similar platform for more than three decades.

The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC), secretary of the Committee of Vice Chancellors, Adigun Abiola and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) while endorsing the discount card urged the youth not to abuse it with frivolous spending.

Increasing Literacy: It Goes Beyond Free Meals


UNESCO describes literacy as a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning. It also ascribed it as being paramount to social and human development in its ability to transform lives.

It wasn’t surprising when Kaduna States commissioner for education, science and technology, Dr. Shehu Adamu disclosed to news men that “pupils had developed habit of leaving school immediately after meal under the guise of going to drink water.” My conclusion towards this report was, “what on earth does the commissioner expects.”

Increasing literacy is actually beyond opting for free meals. The primacies should have been more intense, at least these suggested questions should have been addressed: Do we have the adequate infrastructure and facilities to encourage learning? Are the teachers motivated? And do we have plans for after school.

A keen look into these questions will aid achieve the goals of literacy. You can imagine giving out free meals in dilapidated classrooms. Another case of attracting pupils with free meals to schools where teachers are yet to be paid their salaries – what a miss.

The first question posed will go a long way to encourage learning. We will all agree with me that all our citadels of learning (from the primary to the university level) are in a state of mockery. There have been cases whereby, students are mandated to buy chalks, broom, dusters and yet government taught it wise to have chosen free meals as its priority. Even in the tertiary institutions, most especially the science based courses, materials to carryout researches are not readily available, and in some cases students opt for stores in advance countries to have access to these materials. Enough cases of pupils eating the free meals in classes without chairs or under the tree have also been reported.

It has also been reported that the large span of land that has been allocated to schools are now been sold to raise residential buildings, neglecting the fact that a school constitute not just classrooms, but also farm lands and recreational atmosphere. Government should consider setting up policies that will reshape the educational system.

Are the teachers motivated? No, I choose. Motivation of teachers in this contexts goes beyond their basic salaries it includes allowances such as medical, house, cars etc. We know of some states where teachers’ salaries are yet to be paid for months and yet pupils’ feeding still goes on. We found ourselves in a society where teachers are left to languish in poverty and government policies don’t extends its roots to this nation builders. Government should incorporate all these allowances into their schemes.

In addition, free seminars and workshops should be put in place to update the teachers. The type of teaching method adopted globally now is pedagogy; they should be exposed to this. Furthermore, teachers are not motivated when they realize that their research ends up on the shelf. Government should make use of the researches and promote its quality. Our researchers make finding nowadays just for promotion and not to solve the imminent problem. They can’t be blamed, at least the cobwebs on their previous finding is not a good story to tell. 

After school? This question in its diverse construction among the Nigerian youths, government has taken with a hand of flippancy. Who wants to commit years to learning when you see political thugs better than Mr. B who holds three master degrees? Apart from this, our society has been so frustrating, that you find a situation where a trained medical doctor opts for a banking sector, a botanist opts for a construction company only to mention but a few, just because the government refuses to set its priorities right. Employment now carries this slogan “you have to know somebody that knows somebody somewhere”. All this have complicated our society, branding it more illiterate just because our spanners are in the hands of the geographers while our accounts are being managed by the biochemists.

On this note I strongly conform to the resolution of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) urging the federal government to declare a state of emergency in the educational sector, relinquishing the free meals and taking up imminent problems hindering literacy.

Ayozie (A Corp Member) Donates Chairs To Bayelsa Community School

YENAGOA—STAFF and students of Community Secondary School, Opolo in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State were thrilled by the gesture of Dr Olivia Ayozie, a youth corps member, who donated 20 units of three seater desks to their institution as part of her community development efforts.

Academic activities were temporarily halted for about one hour for the brief presentation ceremony, which attracted officials of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in the state.

Speaking at the ceremony, the state Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Ekeocha Anthony noted that community development service was part of the duties expected of corps members in their areas of assignment.

Represented by Mrs Christy Harry, Deputy Director, NYSC in charge of Community Development , the State Coordinator praised the corps member for her selfless service.

According to him, the youth corper, Ayozie, had embarked on five different community development projects within her service year in the state.

He explained that Ayozie had earlier donated drugs to the NYSC camp, conducted free medical service to a community in Yenagoa, free HIV/AIDS screening and empowerment schemes for widows and the aged.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Mathias Banigo, Principal of the School expressed appreciation to the corps member.

“What is outstanding about this youth corper is that she is not even serving with us, she is a medical doctor serving with the Joint Task Force Clinic, but she came to me and told me of her intentions to donate the chairs, I was very happy.

“She is a blessing to us in this school, and to Bayelsa as a whole, what she did will outlive her service year and will be remembered for years to come, others should emulate her,” he said.

Some students who spoke on the schools desk donation said they were pleased as the donation was a relief to them.

Master Weyinmiebi Eli, a Junior Secondary School, JSS, student said they do not have enough seats and hoped that the desks will be sufficient to meet the shortfall.

Also, Master Walso Napoleon in JSS 1 lauded the corps member for the donation saying it would improve their sitting arrangement.

“What happens is that late comers don’t have seat, so we usually come to school early in order to get a seat, like me I usually come early every day, so we are happy to see the donation of chairs,” he said.

Addressing the students Ayozie urged them to take their studies seriously as the donation was meant to make the study environment conducive.

“This donation is meant to encourage you to work harder, I became a medical doctor because I took my studies seriously at your stage, if you study, you will achieve your career dreams,” Ayozie admonished the students.

Education Sector: NASU Urges FG To Declare State Of Emergency

JOS—NON-ACADEMIC Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, has decried the falling standard of education and the appalling state of schools across the country, blaming it on the low budgetary allocation by the government. 

Members of NASU in the West African Examination Council, WAEC, in a 9 point communiqué at the end of their 36th annual National Congress, in Jos, Plateau State, called on the government to declare a state of emergency in the educational sector as a way of raising the standard, quality of teaching and learning in the nation’s institutions of learning. 

In a communiqué issued by Mr. O. S. Obabunmi and Mrs. O. I. Aje, Chairman and Secretary, respectively, at the end of the conference, NASU lamented the consequences of low budgetary allocation to the sector were being manifested “in falling standard of education and the appalling state of our schools across the country. Therefore, the Congress-In-Session urges the government to declare a state of emergency in the educational sector as a way of raising the standard and quality of teaching and learning in our institutions.” 

While equally lamenting the alarming rate of examination malpractices in the nation’s schools, the Congress-In-Session called “on the federal, state and other stakeholders to collaborate with WAEC and other examination bodies in fighting examination fraud in our country. The legislators are hereby called upon to enact enabling laws that would be strong enough to check the activities of those who use modern technology to perpetrate examination injustice and fraud in the country.” 

NASU members while appreciating government efforts at addressing the epileptic power supply in the country vehemently opposed the increase in electricity tariff without a corresponding improvement in the power supply. They contended that the increase had decreased the purchasing power of an average Nigerian and demanded that the “government as a matter of urgency reverses the hike in electricity tariff which tends to plunge the average Nigerian in perpetual misery and poverty.” 

NASU in the communiqué also decried the poor state of the Nigerian economy occasioned the dwindling oil prices which the country solely depends on. The statement added: “This has led to persistent calls for the devaluation of the Naira as a panacea to the economy. We recall with nostalgia, the negative effect of Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of the Ibrahim Babangida led Military regime and subsequent devaluation of the Naira by successive governments which the country is yet to recover from its ugly effects. The Congress-in-Session therefore, strongly opposes and rejects the call for further devaluation of the Naira, as it has never in the past solved our economic woes. Rather, the Federal government should put policies in place to diversify the economy and improve the infrastructural development that will strengthen the economy.”

Queen's College Sexual Harassment: PTA Set Up Investigation Panel

Lagos (Lagos State) – The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), of Queens College, Lagos said in Lagos on Monday that it had set up panel to investigate alleged sexual harassment in the school.

Chairman of the PTA, Mrs Beatrice Akhetuanen, told a news conference that the panel would be working with the Police Station in Sabo, Yaba to investigate the teacher said to be perpetrating the act.

According to the report, the teacher was said to have sexually harassed a JSS II student of the school.

The report claimed the teacher was usually drunk, and started molesting the girl who screamed and was rescued by some of the girls, booing him.

The student’s mother alleged that she reported the case to the House Mistress who confirmed the teacher was in the habit of doing such and there was nothing anyone could do to him.

She alleged that the case was also reported to the Vice Principal but she said the teacher would not be allowed to leave the school that instead, her daughter would leave.

Akhetuanen said no parent had reported any sexual harassment to the principal or vice principal and that the teacher was not living in the school.

The PTA chairman, however, pleaded with the aggrieved parent to come forth so that the case could be looked into.

”The so-called parent has not shown herself, all efforts to get her has proved abortive.

“When I tried calling the number I saw on the report, she did not pick her call”, she said.

Earlier, the SSS III students were seen protesting, saying that the accused had been set up by someone and was unjustly accused.

New Study Suggests That Alzheimer's Patients Can Store Memories.

A study published in Nature reportedly suggests that people with Alzheimer's are still able to make new memories even while gripped by the condition, and that while they can store memories, problems may lie in their ability to retrieve them.

The study, conducted by neuroscientist Susumu Tonegawa and his team at RIKEN-MIT, involved mice with mutated genes that cause brain conditions similar to those present in Alzheimer's patients.

First, groups of mice were placed in a box and given an electric shock.

The control mice – those without the Alzheimer's-like mutation – became fearful of the box, because they could recall the painful experience.

The mutated mice, however, did not recall the experience and did not display fear when confronted with the box. For the purpose of the experiment, these mice were further genetically engineered to produce a light-sensitive protein in a part of the brain that encodes short-term memory, according to Nature magazine. When the affected neurons were activated with light, the mice were suddenly fearful, recalling the experience of being shocked.

To solidify this effect, the researchers caused the light to repeatedly flash, strengthening the connection in the brain. Once the neural pathway was established, the Alzheimer's-like mice remembered the shock stimulus from the box without the aid of the light.

• There are cautions, though, about applying the study to human Alzheimer's patients.

The brains of mice – and the way they develop Alzheimer's-like plaques – are different than those of humans, a UCLA neurosurgeon told Nature magazine. Additionally, scientists haven't figured out how to stimulate human brains using light. 

Still, these findings could help plan a road map to treat those suffering from the disease.

Your appointment represents the best of Nigeria and signposts the promotion of unity, peace, harmony and better understanding. It demonstrates how we must continue to use our diversity for prosperity.

Again, let me state that I am proud and honoured to be with you and to be in the presence of such esteemed people who represent the best of the wide, tolerant and committed leadership Nigeria needs as we move toward prosperity, peace, hope and justice for each and everyone of us who call themselves members of the Nigerian family.

The Usmanu Dan Fodio University is a great institution located in a great city, named after a great man. I am glad to be associated with this university and privileged to be honored by the institution today. The man after whom the institution is named was a foremost Islamic scholar. An extraordinary leader who understood the deep yearnings and needs of the people. He provided visionary yet practical leadership and taught us all that we must be ready to personally sacrifice to advance and secure those things in which we truly believe. He fought that we may live as better human beings. He struggled that we might know prudent leadership and the fairness and justice that arise from such leadership.

I marvel at the principles he lived by. I have taken courage from his many examples of courage in the face of open danger. We all should receive inspiration from his profound achievements. One of his most powerful quotes readily comes to mind. “Conscience is an open wound, only truth can heal it”. We find instructive the lessons of history-past and present even as I call on all our academic institutions to ensure that history is taught in our schools. This way we prepare future leaders for the task ahead.

The conscience of our nation has been under attack for many years. We were led down a path in which bad was deemed good and good was deemed inconvenient. We were handed a way of governance in which anything goes and too much went – as if gone with the wind. Our present was squandered and future mortgaged. A few people took as their own what God intended to belong to all Nigerians. This was not the way of Usmanu Dan Fodio. This was not the way to build the nation we seek. It was the way to lay waste to our dreams and to jettison all the lessons that heroes such as Usmanu Dan Fodio and our forefathers taught us.

Yet, human nature is such that it cannot exist for long without truth and justice. For a period, darkness may descend and a lie may rule. But not forever. Society needs justice and fairness as much as the body needs food and water.

With last year’s election, the national conscience awoke. The people rejected the distorted arrangements of past governments in order to make room for a better future. They had once again found the courage that Usmanu Dan Fodio had bequeathed them. They had rediscovered their way and their right to pursue it.

Today we all participate in an epic struggle. We seek to undue many years of misgoverance and its myriad consequences. The process is hard because good is always harder to achieve than evil. Creation is always more difficult than destruction. Greed is easier than greatness.

Yet Nigeria has begun the process of turning to its better self. The government of President Muhammadu Buhari is cleaning out the rot of years of galloping corruption and avarice. This government is also moving to pursue policies that will spark development and bring prosperity to long oppressed Nigerians.
Be reminded that this will be a battle. No battle is easy. We must be firm in our resolve to reform this nation. We must have the courage to stand fast in the times of difficulty, having faith that the rightfulness of our cause will see us through to the success of our collective efforts and yearnings.

The truth today is that Nigeria has the greatest opportunity to get it right with a leader like Muhammadu Buhari.
Another truth is that Nigeria and Nigerians are suffering under the yoke of corruption. The economy is based on a model no longer sustainable given the realities of today’s markets and global trends.

There is much to fix. President Buhari is committed to fixing them. But he needs your support and patience. He cannot do it all alone. We must stand beside him or else we may be knocked down and not stand at all.

Thus, let us be resolved to see reform and change that will make Nigeria rise as the nation it should be.

Education and enlightenment have much to do with the success of this national reclamation. This university must be at the fore front. It must strive to be the best and produce students who think as much of this nation as they do themselves. That is how this revered institution may do honor to the name it bears. This is how this institution may ensure that the ethics and principles of Usmanu Dan Fodio continue to have life and continue to breathe life into the progress of this nation. This is how we all join hands – no matter our faith, place of origin, ethnicity or social station- to make our nation live up to it promise and that the sun may never set on building a better day in a better Nigeria.

17 Academic Courses Of Plateau State University Accredited By NUC

The Vice Chancellor, Plateau State University, Prof. Doknan Sheni said that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to 17 academic programmes of the institution

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bokkos on Sunday that the institution needed the accreditation to operate as a full-fledged university.

“For more than 10 years, we have been operating as if we are not a university; without one of our courses accredited.

“But thanks be to God, today all our 17 programmes in the four faculties have been accredited by the NUC,’’ he said.

The vice-chancellor said that with the accreditation, the university would admit more than 1,000 students in the 2016/2017 academic year.

Sheni said the university had been admitting between 300 and 400 students but with the accreditation, it would be admitting between 1,000 and 3,000 applicants.

The vice-chancellor lauded Tertiary Education Trust Fund for assisting in the infrastructural development of the university to the tune of N4 billion.

“Even though we need N5.6 billion for the completion of some ongoing and new projects to the desired infrastructural development, we have what it takes to admit more students now,’’ he said.

Sheni also commended the Chairman of the Governing Council of the University, Prof. Attahiru Jega for the role he played in the accreditation of the programmes.(NAN)

59,000 Relocated UTME Candidates To Be Rescheduled - JAMB

Following the relocation of some computer-based test (CBT) centres, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would be rescheduled for the affected candidates.

Speaking to journalists on Friday in Abuja following the protest by some candidates over the conduct of the UTME, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, yesterday said the board relocated 59, 000 candidates in 15 states because of problems in some of the centres.

He, however, pointed out that the new development does not affect candidates who missed the examination deliberately or failed in the examination.

According to him, among the 1,546,633 candidates that sat for the 2016 UTME, 145, 704 had issues of multiple results which have been resolved by the board.

“We relocated candidates where the board had challenges. The board is looking at some of the issues raised during the examination but most of the excuses raised by candidates are flimsy,” he said.

“We relocated about 59, 000 candidates due to the problems in various centres which vary from town to town. There are about 59,000 spread across 15 states of the federation.

“Those that were relocated never suffered any setback or inconveniences. For all these two set of people I want to apologise sincerely for what happened to them but we are going to put on a redress for those whose relocation affected them in missing their examination.”
