In line with its commitment to ensuring continual success of the Lagos State Schools’ Debate as one of the channels of promoting youth development, hard work and healthy competition amongst students the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has added N2.5 million to the cash prizes of winners of this year’s competition.
Presenting the cash prizes to the winners, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, urged all secondary schools in the state to brace up to the challenge, work hard and participate in the subsequent editions with the aim of defeating the champions of today.
With this development, Badagry Senior Grammar School went home with the star prize of N1.5m while the first runner up, Ogudu Senior High School, went home with N1.1m. Lagos Progressive Senior Secondary School, Surulere and CMS Girls Grammar School both coasted home with N750,000 and N500,000 respectively.
While commending the parents, the Deputy Governor specially appreciated the teachers for working tirelessly in grooming the students in the debate competition, the result of which has manifested in the proficiency in which the students intelligently articulated their thoughts on issues on a broad spectrum covering academics, political, economic, social and moral development in the nation.
In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Olabisi Ariyo, stated that the annual debate, which is an integral part of the state annual school calendar in the area of co-curricular activities, is opened to all public and private senior secondary schools in the state.
Her words “The competition is geared towards improving academic research, students’ intellectual capabilities and communication skills as well as instilling in them the confidence to speak intelligently anywhere and at any time.
