The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), through its President, Comrade Usman Yusuf Dutse disclosed while addressing journalists at the end of the 83rd quarterly meeting of the national executive council (NEC) of the union in Lafia, that it has given the federal government till the end of the month to meet the demands of their members or the union would embark on nationwide indefinite strike.
Comrade Dutse stated their demands to include adequate infrastructure in polytechnics across the country, adequate funding and the need for the review of Polytechnics Acts which are outdated. Others include implementation and payment of salary arrears of 2012 consolidated tertiary institutions salary structure (Contiss), 2010 Contiss agreememt with the federal government which was mot captured in the 2016 budget as the committee set up to review it in 2014 was yet to submit its report. Tackling the issue of University/Polytechnic dichotomy as according to him Bachelor’s degree and Higher National Degree (HND)
On the Nasarawa state Polytechnic (Naspoly) Lafia, the ASUP president expressed disappointment with the dearth of infrastructure in the institution and called on Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura tackle the problem , most especially as regards sharing same facilities with primary and secondary schools within the premises of the institution.
“We cannot efficiently operate with the TSA platform because it is cumbersome, so it is not good for tertiary institutions” he said.
