The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu to reinstate the unjustly sacked 12 federal universities vice-chancellors and National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) based on the directives by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking during a world press conference in Abuja, yesterday, the national president, NANS, Comrade Tijani Shehu stated that they were dismayed by the fact that the minister of Education was yet to do the needful by reinstating the sacked vice chancellors.
Shehu said: ‘’The minister has chosen to give diverse counter-interpretations to Mr. President’s apology just to soothe his whims and ego. Whereas the President categorically stated that there are specifically spelt out roles for which the Governing Councils are meant to perform their roles on employment and retirement.’’
It would be recalled that President Buhari apologised for dissolving the governing councils of universities along with the boards of parastatal s and agencies.
Buhari who offered the apology during the National Executive Council meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, said the decision was regretted.
The NANS national president also requested that the Education minister should tender an unreserved apology to Nigeria and the entire academic community for his actions.
He, however, added that if any of the 13 Vice Chancellors so affected has completed his tenure, the due procedure as spelt out by the university rules should be followed for the appointment of new Vice Chancellors in the universities concerned.
