U.S. Education Support: 24,731 Nigerians Benefits

Mrs Chinenye Uwadileke, EducationUSA Adviser at the U.S. Consulate-General in Lagos, on Wednesday said that about 24,731 Nigerians had in the last three years benefited from U.S. educational support programmes.

Uwadileke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that 7,316 Nigerians benefited from the programme in 2013, 7,921 in 2014, while 9,494 benefited in 2015 to pursue their education in the U.S.

The education adviser said that the number of the beneficiaries was annually released by the Institute of International Education (IIE)Open Doors Report included international students and those doing research.

“The Open Doors’ Report by the Institute of International Education Student Mobility from Nigeria to the U.S. has it that 24,731Nigerians were supported educationally in the last three years.

“Open Doors are being supported by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

“Open Doors give comprehensive statistics on the number of international students at colleges and universities in the U.S. as well as an analysis of trends over time,’’ she said.

Uwadileke also said that the open doors were an information resource on international students and scholars studying or teaching in higher education institutions in the U.S.

She urged more Nigerians to feel free to avail themselves of the different educational exchange programmes being offered by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.

Uwadileke appealed to young Nigerians to take advantage of the EducationUSA Opportunity Funds programme, meant to assist “highly qualified’’ students.

She also said that it was important for young Nigerians to exploit the U.S. Youth Leadership Programme which would foster mutual understanding and civic engagement between them and young Americans. (NAN)
